Ikemefuma has been
for 3 years now with Oknokwo, and he has become one more member of the family.
Nwoye and Ikemefuma are really good friends and Ikemefuma has influenced in
Nwoye's behavior. The locusts have arrived to the village and they arrive every
once in a while so they are surprised. They collect them and cook them. Ogbuefi
Ezedu came to Oknokwo's obi and told him that The Oracle says that Ikemefuma
must me killed. Oknokwo says Ikemefuma that he must return to his home village
so they went to the forest and a man attacked him with a machete, Okonknwo didn't
want to look weak so he cut him down. Nwoye was broken when he received the
notice.
Oknonkwo is in
depression, he reminds Ikemefuma all the time. Oknokwo feels like he is
behaving like a woman so he decides to go on with his life to distract from Ikemefuma's
death. Okonwo visits Oberika who doesn't agree with Okonkwo in taking part in
the murder of Ikemefuma.
Okonkwo stays with
Oberika to discuss his daughter bride-price and then discuss about neighbor
villages traditions.
Ekwefi was really
scared because Enzima was really sick. Ekwefi really loved Enzima and they
share a relationship of equals. Ekwefi lost 9 children after having Enzima,
they thought she had a ogbanje which is a kid that dies and borns again so they
killed the last children and burried it and Enzima didn’t die but every time
Enzima is sick Ekwefi is really scared.
The village has a
gathering where woman can’t enter. The egwugwu are clan’s ancestral spirits
with masks. They have a case of a problem between a husband and a wife.
Ekwedi tells Ezinma
a story about why the Tortoise’s shell is not smooth. Chielo, which is the
priestess, informs that the Oracle wants to see Ezinma. Ekwefi is scared that
Enzima goes alone so Oknokwo and she follow her. Okonkwo calms Ekwefi and they
both remind of when she ran away from her husband to marry Okonkwo.
Chielo brings
Enzima to Ekwefi’s hut. Oknokwo’s family helps prepare Oberika’s daughter
engagement ceremony. The feast was a total success.
Ogbuefi Ezedu is
death and his death is announced in the village with drums. Okonkwo remembers
that the last time he saw Egbuefi was when he announced that Ikemefuma must
die.
In the funeral,
Okonkwo accidentally kills Ogbuefi Ezedu’s son so he must take his most
valuable pertinences and leave with his family for 7 years.
